Hasami Porcelain: Changes Over Time
Our mission at Mogutable is to bring you long-lasting, beautiful everyday objects for well, everyday use. Similar to how clothes see some wear when worn with love frequently, our products also may change subtly over the course of time.
The widely loved Hasami Porcelain collection is distinctive with its natural-feeling porcelain material. Their porcelain is unique to the Hasami village in Nagasaki, Japan not only for the material itself but for its production process. Each product is passed onto different craftsmen, who have a specific role they own (e.g. one craftsman mixes the soil and stone, another molds the product, while the next supervises the kiln during the firing process). This style of labor organization has been passed down since the beginning of the Edo period to the present day Hasami village. The process paired with seasonal conditions ultimately produce naturally unique pieces that can vary in color and texture — so while each product is individual and unique to start, their texture and color can also naturally change over time with recurring use.
The images above, for example, shows the difference between a new (right) Ceramic Mug in Black and a well-loved one (left). You can see the subtle characteristic differences between the two. The black glaze develops some sort of a metallic luster and bounces light just a bit more.
Then we have the best-selling Ceramic Mug in Natural. Over time, the mug becomes smoother in texture (right) while a brand new mug shows its porous exterior.
We feel that with these incremental changes that become visible to the eye over time, these objects feel more and more like our very own. Because each point of touch and use is so personal, it becomes a part of our daily story... making these materialistic changes beautiful and natural to us.
